North America Has Biggest Rise in Weather Catastrophes

Climate change contributed to a fivefold increase in weather-related natural disasters in North America over the past three decades, according to Munich Re, the world’s biggest re-insurer. “Nowhere in the world is the rising number of natural catastrophes more evident than in North America,” Peter Hoeppe, head of Munich Re’s Geo Risks Research unit, told reporters in Munich today. There was a four-fold gain in disasters in Asia, while the number doubled in Europe, the re-insurer said.

Texas Raises Speed Limit to 85mph: Other States Could, Too

Texas' new highest-in-the-nation speed limit - 85 mph on a 41-mile stretch of toll road between Austin and San Antonio- could mean that other states will soon see higher speed limits, experts say. The Texas Transportation Commission approved the new speed limit on Aug. 30; the first section of the toll road opens later this year. Rates will be set then, but will be comparable to other Central Texas toll roads. Tolls in Central Texas average 20-30 cents per mile for a full-length trip, says Steve Pustelnyk, spokesman for the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, which manages toll roads in the Austin area.

A combination of rising commercial insurance prices and ongoing industry consolidation will fuel growth for the global insurance brokerage sector, according to a report released by New York-based Moody’s Investors Service Inc. on Wednesday. The report, written by Bruce Ballentine, VP and senior credit officer, and Benjamin Goldberg, associate analyst, analyzes three global, publicly traded brokerage firms and seven midsize and smaller firms that are privately held.“The stable sector outlook reflects the valuable service offering of these firms (given the increasingly complex risks faced by clients) along with their high proportion of variable costs, limited capital requirements, lack of underwriting or investment risk, and relatively stable cash flows,” the report states.
